Darien Whitehead is a self taught artist who began his career as a purist sculptor carving both wood and stone. Working without guidance until he felt the work was ‘right’.
Influenced by what he calls the human magpie effect, i.e. the attraction to natural objects and phenomena. Darien has attempted to capture, if not a figurative representation of the subject, then the feeling of being held in wonder by these phenomena. The lack of great colour variation in the materials that lend themselves to being carved, has led to Darien moving into painting over the last few years, where he continues to employ techniques from sculpture and to experiment with new ones.
Darien exhibits widely throughout Kent and Sussex. |
